The AUN-QA IQA Redesign Taskforce Team Assembled to Set the Path Forward for ASEAN IQA

Following the success of the Internal Quality Assurance System Design and Development Workshop in March 2023, Viet Nam, the AUN-QA IQA Redesign Taskforce was established and recently conducted its first meeting on 20 - 21 October 2023 in Bangkok. Through the intensive discussion on existing Viet Nam and Cambodia IQA frameworks and the root-cause analysis of the workshop in Viet Nam, the outcome of this meeting will pave the way for the future of ASEAN IQA and the task force will be at the forefront!

AUN-DLSU Summer Camp 2025: Exploring Marine Ecosystem and Strengthening Bonds Beyond Borders

Concluding on 7 June, the AUN-DLSU Summer Camp 2025 brought together 21 students across 7 ASEAN countries for a two-week experience across Br. Alfred Shields FSC Marine Station (BrAMS), DLSU Laguna Campus, and DLSU Manila Campus structured around the theme “Sustainable Oceans, Thriving Communities”. With hands-on underwater coral reef survey at Talim Outer A-Reef, along with data gathering and analysis, campers developed an understanding of the role these organisms play in sustaining a healthy marine environment – and the planet. Aside from adding texture to the campers’ environmental literacy, visits to Laguna and Manila have also become a breeding ground for meaningful cross-border friendships which are expected to last a lifetime.

Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Coordination Training Workshop 2025: Building the Next Generation of STI Coordinators

The Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Coordination Training Workshop for the Next Generation of STI Coordinators 2025, co-organised by the Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Platform (JASTIP), ASEAN University Network (AUN) and ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asian Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net), was recently held from 28-30 May, 2025 — building upon the STI Coordination Symposium in March, 2025. The purpose of the workshop is to provide 20 nominated participants from JASTIP, AUN and AUN/SEED-Net member institutions the chance to develop skillsets and abilities to become future STI Coordinators, with the vision of these coordinators being the bridge in extending research in fields of technology and innovation into the next generation. This then provides the platform for continuous technological advancements and breakthrough innovation.

12th ASEAN+3 IRO Meeting: Strengthening Glorecal Connections for a Digitally Sustainable Education Future

The 12th ASEAN+3 Heads of International Relations Meeting, hosted by Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) on 8-9 May, 2025, in Bandung, Indonesia, brought together over 60 international relations leaders from ASEAN+3 UNeT Member Universities under the theme "Glorecal Connections: Driving Digital Transformation for a Sustainable Education Future," featuring bilateral networking sessions, keynote presentations, institutional showcases, and high-level visits to ITB's innovation facilities. The meeting's interactive rotating workshops centered on global, regional, and local perspectives revealed that ASEAN+3's strength lies in its ability to integrate diverse strategies into a unified, sustainable digital education ecosystem where international excellence, regional solidarity, and local empowerment converge. Participants also engaged in cultural experiences including an Angklung music session and Batik workshop. The event has supported universities in developing digital transformation strategies, and enhancing collaboration among ASEAN+3 educational institutions for sustainable education across the region.

AUN Engagement with Timor-Leste Highlights Potential for Quality Assurance and Qualifications Excellence

The ASEAN University Network (AUN) conducted a scoping visit to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to collaborate with local educational institutions and government bodies. This initiative aimed at enhancing quality assurance and qualifications excellence in Timor-Leste's higher education sector. The visit, hosted in Dili by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Culture, featured engagement from all 19 universities in the country, demonstrating a robust collective effort to advance educational standards

Strengthening Institutional Excellence: Reflecting on THE-AUN Webinars and the Way Forward in 2025

Throughout the months of October to November in 2024, the Times Higher Education - ASEAN University Network (THE-AUN) tripart webinar series brought together over 1,000 participants from 523 institutions across 24 countries, strengthening institutional understanding of university rankings, sustainability, and strategic reputation management. Spanning three sessions, the series provided valuable insights into THE Impact and World University Rankings, with interactive discussions, expert-led presentations, and strong engagement from AUN member universities. With a 94% positive satisfaction rate, participants praised the webinars for their clarity, depth, and relevance, highlighting a growing interest in best practices and case studies for institutional excellence. Building on this success, AUN and THE are exploring further collaborations in 2025 to expand engagement and deepen content delivery.

ASEAN-Japan Youth Forum: Take Actions for Social Change (TASC) 2024 - Promoting Equitable Access for Persons with Disabilities

The ASEAN-Japan Youth Forum: Take Actions for Social Change (TASC) 2024, a joint initiative between the Japan Foundation and ASEAN University Network (AUN), brought together 20 undergraduate students from Japan and ASEAN countries for a dynamic learning experience under the theme “Good Health and Well-Being”. The programme featured visits to social welfare organisations in Osaka, Mie and Tokyo that provided students with the opportunity to engage directly with local communities. Following the previous article that explored visits to institutions in Osaka centred around “community-building”, find in this piece an overview of the visits to NPO Comekko in Osaka and Nabari City Community Health Room in Mie, and the Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities in Tokyo. Insights gained from the knowledge delivered by experts enriched the students’ final presentations on the last day of this trip which reflected the importance of youth-driven initiatives in reaching an inclusive and equitable society.

ASEAN University Network for Agriculture and Food Security (AUN-AFS) Leads Interdisciplinary Innovation in Higher Education

The first event of the Inaugural ASEAN University Network for Agriculture and Food Security (AUN-AFS) Webinar Series held on 10 February 2025 successfully marked a significant milestone in fostering a regional dialogue on food security and agriculture in ASEAN higher education. Attracting over 800 participants from ASEAN countries, China, Guinea and Uganda, the webinar showcased remarkable diversity and representation across a broad spectrum of institutions including universities, agricultural organisations, government agencies and the medical sector. The strong engagement from students, professors, researchers and head of faculties underscores the critical role of higher education in advancing inclusive and research-driven solutions for food security and agriculture. Hosted by Universiti Putra Malaya (UPM), the webinar featured speakers from 3 ASEAN countries–Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand–who touched upon not only food security in its production phases but also accessibility, affordability and safety. A key highlight was the launch of the “UPM Blueprint on Food Security”, a strategic framework guiding the university’s initiatives in merging academic excellence among students with the necessary technological competencies to transform the agricultural community. UPM’s leadership in developing the blueprint positions the university at the forefront of agricultural and food security innovation, as well as the host institution of AUN-AFS.

"Management and Strategy: How AUN-HPN Became a Driving Force for Regional Health Promotion" Has Officially Launched

Since its establishment in 2014, ASEAN University Network Health Promotion Network (AUN-HPN) has been actively contributing to university health promotion across the ASEAN region. In this connection, the book "Management and Strategy: How AUN-HPN Became a Driving Force for Regional Health Promotion" has been published by the AUN Secretariat team in coordination with AUN-HPN to observe and catalogue the good practices in managing the thematic network of universities. To do so, this book focuses on the work and perspectives of AUN-HPN’s past and current thought leaders as well as the observation of AUN-HPN flagship activities.

AUN Core Member Universities Shared Insights and Good Practices in Advancing Sustainable Development at the 15th AUN Rectors’ Meeting

Continuing on the topics of universities’ roles in pivoting positive change towards sustainable development, Session 2 of the 15th AUN Rectors’ Meeting’s Presidential Forum themed “AUN Universities at the Forefront of Sustainable Development on the Global Stage” shifted the focus towards the progress and accomplishments of AUN Core Member Universities in implementing sustainability initiatives. Through great examples and perspectives arising from a panel joined by Presidents, Rectors and Vice-chancellors of high ranking SDG-aligned AUN Core Member Universities, the Meeting enjoyed fruitful and engaging discussions on how ASEAN higher education institutions can strategically thrive and address challenges implementing sustainability projects related to the betterment for their own institutions as well as the society as a whole.

Uniting for Impact: the 15th AUN Rectors’ Meeting Showcased Universities’ Power as Partnership for the Goals

At the 15th AUN Rectors’ Meeting held on 18 July 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand; the first session of the morning presidential forum united leaders of AUN Member Universities, together with representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, AUN/SEED-Net, and University of Southern Queensland in an engaging dialogue on the topic “Universities as the Pillars of Partnership for the Goals”. Throughout this session, the insights and perspectives shared by the distinguished speakers helped illustrate the strength of international university cooperation in fostering social progress for local and global communities towards the Sustainable Development Goals, with emphasis on the Southeast Asia region.

AUN Thought Leaders Fostered the Dialogue on University Roles in Sustainable Development Goals at the 15th AUN Rectors’ Meeting

The 15th ASEAN University Network (AUN) Rectors’ Meeting was organized by the AUN Secretariat on 18 July 2024 in Bangkok as a platform that united Presidents, Rectors and Vice Chancellors of AUN Rectors’ Meeting of AUN Core Member Universities as well as distinguished guests to share, discuss and deliberate on trends as well as developments within the Network instrumental to the advancement of ASEAN higher education. With the theme “Shaping Our Region & The World: The Force of Universities in Sustainable Development”, the morning session of the Meeting brought together leaders of AUN Core Member Universities, as well as distinguished speakers from the Network’s partner institutions and organisations for a dialogue and knowledge sharing on the roles of universities in sustainable development, with emphasis on the ASEAN region and AUN.

The Wait is Over! Universiti Malaya’s International Masters in Human Development Programme Now Ready for Launch

An exciting update from Universiti Malaya! Dr. Welyne Jeffrey Jehome, anthropologist and senior lecturer from Universiti Malaya, together with Dr. Bob Aubrey, founder and chair of the advisory board of the ASEAN Human Development Organization (AHDO), revealed in the 14th AUN Rectors’ Meeting that Universiti Malaya’s International Masters in Human Development Programme is now ready for launch. This international master programme conceived in 2021 aims to nurture professionals who will put human development into practice at their respective organisations. After two years in the making, the door will now open for the future champion of human development in ASEAN.

The 14th AUN Rectors’ Meeting: ASEAN Higher Education, the Change-Maker

The 14th AUN Rectors’ Meeting was convened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 5 July 2023, with gracious hosting from Universiti Malaya. After various discussions on ‘changes’ that are happening in the educational landscape and the expectation of the people, the 3rd panel discussion positioned ASEAN higher education as the ‘change-maker’ itself. Bestowed with talents and potentials as it is, the door is wide open for ASEAN higher education to extend its influence and be the driver for greater goods in the global community.

The 14th AUN Rectors’ Meeting: How ASEAN Higher Education can Stay ahead of the Fast-Changing Curve

The world has entered an age when ‘knowledge’ is ‘expiring’ fast. With new disruptions coming up one after the other, the knowledge and skills students learn in class can quickly go obsolete. How can ASEAN higher education keep up with this? In the 2nd session of the 14th AUN Rectors’ Meeting “Meeting the expectations of the people,” top executives of AUN Member Universities discussed how ASEAN higher education can nurture the skills and virtues that will remain relevant to the upcoming generation and “future-proof” them, even in the volatile, fast-changing world.
